Cancer Journal for Clinicians Essay

Human papilloma virus prevention and treatment recommendations such as routine vaccination programs have been adopted globally targeting high risk individuals. However, current guidelines differ across countries and hence I chose Human Papilloma virus infection as my Clinical practice guidelines topic to get to understand the diversity.

The topic I chose for my CPG wasn’t difficult to find during my search. There was a wide range of online sources from different sites that made the search possible. This is because HPV is an issue of public health concern and hence has earned attention from multiple authors both governmental and nongovernmental organizations as well as individuals. The CPG said a number of things that I didn’t know. These include that boys should be vaccinated against HPV infection alongside girls at the age of 11 to 12 years (Martínez-Gómez et al., 2019). In addition, I didn’t know that the effectiveness of the vaccine reduces with age and particularly after the age of 26 years and hence patients over this age could still be at a high risk regardless of having the vaccination.

During my search, I found a number of sites bearing my topic such as:

  1. National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6381660/
  2. American Academy of Family Physicians https://www.aafp.org/afp/2005/0701/p178.html
  3. American Cancer Society https://www.cancer.org/health-care-professionals/american-cancer-society-prevention-early-detection-guidelines/hpv-guidelines.html

The human papilloma virus infection guidelines and recommendations developed by the American Cancer Society presented effective ways in managing the condition. During my practice, I have been practicing some of the recommendations even though not all. For instance, I have been careful with not providing the HPV vaccination to pregnant mothers who are expected to wait until they deliver the baby even though a pregnancy test is not a necessity during testing (Saslow et al., 2020).

Purpose: To expose you to clinical practice guidelines. Clinical practice guidelines (CPG) are “systematically developed statements to assist practitioner decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances.” Guidelines can be used to reduce inappropriate variations in practice and to promote the delivery of high quality, evidence-based health care. They may also provide a mechanism by which healthcare professionals can be made accountable for clinical activities. Although most of the development and evaluation of CPG has occurred in the field of medicine, nurses are becoming more interested in the use of guidelines as one means of facilitating evidence-based practice.  Thomas L Clinical practice guidelines Evidence-Based Nursing 1999;2:38-39

Tasks: Search online for clinical practice guidelines applicable to your BSN nursing practice problem you are interested in during this semester.
