Bioremediation Essay Example

Bioremediation Essay Example

Define and describe bioremediation. What is it, and how does it help the environment?

Microorganisms are deeply connected to the environment, and humans depend on them in a variety of ways. In the Competency Assessment, you will explore important roles that microorganisms play in the world around you through bioremediation.

Assignment Instructions:

  1. Define and describe bioremediation. What is it, and how does it help the environment? Bioremediation Essay Example.
  2. Discuss two examples of specific microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, etc.) that are used to remove pollutants through bioremediation. Provide the scientific name (genus and species) of the two microbes selected, and briefly describe their role in bioremediation.
  3. Bioremediation can come in many forms. There are many approaches that can be taken to address diverse perspectives while also providing benefits to the broader community. In a summary paragraph:
  • Discuss two examples in which bioremediation can be used to meet a global challenge.
  • Discuss the benefits of each example (for example, there are different approaches to reducing water pollution or improving the health of the environment).

You have the option of presenting your Assignment in one of the following three formats:

  1. Word document: Submit a 700–900 word paper in APA format including an introduction, conclusion, and in-text citations and reference page. Bioremediation Essay Example.
  2. PowerPoint Presentation: Create a PowerPoint presentation fully outlining your examples. Your presentation should be 9–12 slides in length, and include an introductory slide, in-text citations where applicable, a conclusion slide, and a reference slide. Use images (with citations) to create an effective and professional presentation. Slides should be brief and bulleted. The PowerPoint should include your detailed notes below the slides, outlining exactly what you would say to an audience as you presented it.

*If you do not have access to PowerPoint, you can go to https://www.openoffice.org to download the program Impress. This program enables you to create a PowerPoint presentation with a free, compatible program through Open Office.

  1. Audio / Podcast presentation: Create a 5–10 minute presentation using an audio program you are comfortable with (e.g., Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). You must include a written transcript in Microsoft Word with your audio presentation.

Bioremediation is a branch of biotechnology that employs the use of living organisms, like microbes and bacteria, in the removal of contaminants, pollutants, and toxins from soil, water, and other environments. Bioremediation may be used to clean up contaminated groundwater or environmental problems, such as oil spills.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Bioremediation is a branch of biotechnology that employs the use of living organisms, like microbes and bacteria, in the removal of contaminants, pollutants, and toxins from soil, water, and other environments.
  • Bioremediation is used to clean up oil spills or contaminated groundwater.
  • Bioremediation may be done “in situ”–at the site of the contamination–or “ex situ”–away from the site.
How Bioremediation Works

Bioremediation relies on stimulating the growth of certain microbes that utilize contaminants like oil, solvents, and pesticides for sources of food and energy. Bioremediation Essay Example. These microbes convert contaminants into small amounts of water, as well as harmless gases like carbon dioxide.

Bioremediation requires a combination of the right temperature, nutrients, and foods. The absence of these elements may prolong the cleanup of contaminants. Conditions that are unfavorable for bioremediation may be improved by adding “amendments” to the environment, such as molasses, vegetable oil, or simple air. These amendments optimize conditions for microbes to flourish, thereby accelerating the completion of the bioremediation process.

Bioremediation can either be done “in situ”, which is at the site of the contamination itself, or “ex situ,” which is a location away from the site. Ex situ bioremediation may be necessary if the climate is too cold to sustain microbe activity, or if the soil is too dense for nutrients to distribute evenly. Ex situ bioremediation may require excavating and cleaning the soil above ground, which may add significant costs to the process.

The bioremediation process may take anywhere from several months to several years to complete, depending on variables such as the size of the contaminated area, the concentration of contaminants, temperature, soil density, and whether bioremediation will occur in situ or ex situ.

Advantages of Bioremediation

Bioremediation offers numerous advantages over other cleanup methods. By relying solely on natural processes, it minimizes damage to ecosystems. Bioremediation often takes place underground, where amendments and microbes can be pumped in order to clean up contaminants in groundwater and soil. Consequently, bioremediation does not disrupt nearby communities as much as other cleanup methodologies.

The bioremediation process creates relatively few harmful byproducts (mainly due to the fact that contaminants and pollutants are converted into water and harmless gases like carbon dioxide).Bioremediation Essay Example. Finally, bioremediation is cheaper than most cleanup methods because it does not require substantial equipment or labor. By the end of 2018, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had brought bioremediation activities to a total of 1,507 sites.

Example of Bioremediation

In 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil tanker ran aground off the coast of Alaska; the tanker ended up spilling approximately 11 million gallons of oil. Around this same time, bioremediation was gaining traction as a viable option for oil cleanups. The EPA and Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM) both began testing different compounds. Initial tests regarding the effectiveness of bioremediation looked promising.

Between 1989 and 1990, more than 100,000 pounds of fertilizer was applied over more than 2000 applications to the affected areas. By mid-1992, the cleanup was considered complete, and the fertilizer had degraded nearly all the oil compounds. Bioremediation Essay Example.
