The Virtual Learning Assignment (VLA) is a faculty-precepted clinical practicum experience. Competency-driven learning activities take place in a standardized virtual learning environment (VLE) which supports consistency between student experiences as well as the opportunity to gauge performance. Students interact with virtual patients and participate in concept labs which simulate real life clinical experiences. The VLA allows the student to explore, analyze, and manage health conditions frequently encountered in the primary care setting.
Competence is the observable ability of a health professional to integrate knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes. Competency is more than the attainment of skills; it involves other qualities such as attitudes, motives, personal insightfulness, interpretive ability, receptivity, maturity, and self-assessment. Since competencies are observable, they can be measured and assessed to ensure their acquisition.

Student participation requirements in the VLA clinical environment should mirror the student participation requirements for any clinical setting. Students who actively assume responsibility for their own clinical learning get much more out of clinical rotations than those who just passively observe. Students are expected to:
