The primary objective of your practicum is to “build and assimilate knowledge for advanced specialty practice at a high level of complexity,” (AACN, 2006, p. 19). To elaborate a bit on the week 1 assignment:

1. Learning objectives: Your learning objectives need to be carefully considered. Do not use AANC essentials as your objectives. Rather, think about what you want to accomplish and write out the objective. Then specify which AANC essential aligns with each objective. If this is not your first field experience, be aware that you need new learning objectives. Continuations of previous objectives will not be approved. You don’t need to drastically change your activities. However, you do need to shift your focus towards new objectives.

Take advantage of this time as a student to gain the experiences that you want and need. This course provides a wonderful opportunity for you to direct your own learning and a venue for you to gain experiences you wouldn’t ordinarily have. Enjoy it!

2. Activities: Please write activities specific to each objective. Make sure that your activities are active. Observation may have some value, but you may not spend all of your hours observing.

3. Timeline: Provide sufficient detail in your timeline for the key benchmarks you wish to achieve at specific intervals. Be sure to comment on the number of hours you plan to do each week and specify the total number of clinical hours you will complete this term. You need to complete 216 clinical hours for each credit hour you are registered for. I need to ensure that you are planning on the same number of yours that you are registered for early in the term so that there are no surprises at the end. I will verify what you tell me with registration to be sure we are on the same page.
