Critical care nurse burnout has turned out to be a special pertinent healthcare issue in patient care matters in the recent past. Nurse burnout refers to emotional, physical, and mental state due to overwork and insufficient job satisfaction. Nurse burnout is an associated factor that determines the provision of quality patient care, patient service outcome, and the type of service provided to a patient in the care unit. This paper gives an in-depth analysis of nurse burnout discussion focused on the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH). However, the discussion will raise some of the significant recommendations if adequately employed; it can decrease job fatigue and nurse burnout while maintaining quality patient care. Nurse Fatigue and Burnout
In the nursing care field, burnout and nurse fatigue are standard issues that arise due to increased stress, long working hours, and experiencing traumatic exposure while attending patients (Cocker & Joss, 2016). The patient care unit involves increased work pressure, which leads to high levels of nurse burnout occurrence. Nurse burnout and fatigue are major setbacks that alter nurses’ proper services to patients in health care. At the University Of New Mexico Hospital, nurse burnout is the main reason for high turnover levels in the institution (University of New Mexico, 2016). According to research, it shows there is a close relationship that causes both high levels of turnovers and staff burnout. However, the medical institution continuously experiences nurse burnout and fatigue problems. Some of the reasons include a chaotic job environment, imbalanced job-work life, tight schedules, lack of social and moral support, and ineffective management control. Presently, the institution is making efforts to strategize effective plans that will enable them to eradicate high rates of nurse burnout rates while minimizing nurse turnover.Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue
This paper reviewed an article titled “Prevalence of burnout syndrome in emergency nurses,” authored by Gómez-Urquiza et al. (2017). In a meta-analysis, the article assists in discussing the stressor in the medical institution on burnout syndrome. In this article, the author highlights burnout as a significant stressor in the healthcare field, thus providing an in-depth discussion on how the cases are rampant for nurses working at the emergency department. Moreover, the author proposes several interventions and recommendations that can be put in place to minimize burnout syndrome cases in the patient care unit. According to Gómez-Urquiza et al. (2017), an intervention of coming up with a professional peer group is a crucial idea that will help the nurses share their feelings and experience and a source of motivation, thus decreasing the burn out syndrome occurrence within the healthcare profession.
According to Gillespie and Melby (2003) authored an article titled “Burnout among nursing staff in accident and emergency and acute medicine: a comparative study”, conducted a research that included both quantitative and qualitative research methods. However, while conducting the research, the authors were interested in finding out the factors contributing to the development of burnout and stress within the nursing profession and the consequences of such pressure inpatient care. Also, the research included an individual’s stress and burnout experience outside the clinical setting. According to the researchers, the need to come up with a good working network to nurses, improve interpersonal relationships, and foster teamwork in improving staff morale in reducing stress. Conclusively, the researchers found out that provision of support, resources, and betters education will be a significant boost in reducing burnout and stress within the healthcare environment.
To offer quality patient services, stress and burnout should be eliminated. However, this can be achieved by incorporating the proposed intervention, as highlighted by the reviewed articles above. The UNMH should aim at stress and burnout reduction within the institution by using different plans such as initiating effective scheduling, introducing better working conditions, and embracing peer groups’ formation among nurses. To ensure supervision and cooperation, the application of proper conveyance of information should be provided to ensure that every individual understands the need to welcome the change put in place. Consequently, after the nurses and staff understand the reason to accommodate the institution’s transformation, they will support the intervention ensuring that nurses offer quality services since they can manage stress and burnout. Also, introducing a counseling facility for stress management will significantly ensure the staff can balance their working life and everyday life, thereby reducing burnout and stress (Hilcove, et al., 2020). In conclusion, nurse burnout is presently a significant problem in various medical institutions. However, this problem directly decreases the level of morale and performance to nurses and affects the quality of service patients get in the healthcare unit. Therefore, it is necessary to manage stress and burnout among nurses through the implementation of proper support and the introduction of adequate education. The medical institution must provide an appropriate environment that allows working balance for nurses and flexible schedules that permit minimal stress and burnout. These will enable the provision of quality patients while increasing nurse’s productivity.
