Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 6 – Finalizing the Plan

The psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) and the family nurse practitioner (FNP) both belong to the certified nurse practitioner role of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). However, the PMHNP specializes in treating mental illnesses and caring for mentally ill patients across the lifespan. The FNP on the other hand treats all kinds of illnesses and injuries in children, adults, and elderly patients without being confined to one kind of disease. Certification for the PMHNP is obtained from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), while that one for the FNP can be obtained from either the ANCC or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or AANP (Registered Nursing, 2019).Academic Success and Professional Development Plan.

The choice of PMHNP is informed by the fact that it is not a jack-of-all-trades kind of specialty but focuses attention on a particular class of illnesses which is mental illnesses. This means that the PMHNP is a specialist in the true sense of the word. Being a PMHNP therefore allows for mastery of the management of mental illnesses which will make the practitioner very efficient and effective in the specialty (Nurse Practitioner Schools, 2019).Academic Success and Professional Development Plan.

The other rationale for the choice of PMHNP s that there are very few mental health clinicians and professionals at the community level offering primary health care targeted at mental health. This is especially true for minority communities, leading to high rates of substance use disorders and suicide/ homicide. Taking the PMHNP specialty will enable the filling of this gap and giving back to the community.Academic Success and Professional Development Plan.

One of the best professional nursing organizations for PMHNP is the American Psychiatric Nurses Association or APNA established in 1986. It brings together all the PMHNPs in the country and helps with professional development as well as advocacy for the welfare of PMHNPs. Joining the association is by subscription to become a member (DeCapua, 2017).  Academic Success and Professional Development Plan.
