PICOT Question on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women and the cause of significant morbidity and mortality. It was the cause of mortality for about 266,000 women in 2012 alone. Almost all cervical cancers are caused by the human papillomavirus or HPV (WHO, 2018). The evidence-based topic chosen for this PICO project is the role of vaccination and health education on the prevention of cervical cancer in later life. The PICOT question for this topic is as follows:

In adolescent girls aged 9-14 years (P), does vaccination against HPV together with educational intervention (I) compared to vaccination alone (C) result in fewer cervical cancer cases (O) in later premenopausal adult life before the age of 50 years (T)?

The potential BSN care practices for which this EBP project can be used are the lack of health education to adolescent girls on primary prevention of cervical cancer as well as the lack of sensitization of parents on the importance of getting their adolescent daughters vaccinated against the HPV. Some of the barriers to implementing EBP in a clinical setting are (i) resistance to change (ii) an organizational culture of complacency, and (iii) a high employee turnover.PICOT Question on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Cervical Cancer.

For selecting the topic, some of the useful and helpful activities include interviewing registered BSN nurses who are involved with women’s health and reproductive health matters. The other one is talking to adolescent girls in schools about their vaccination status for the human papillomavirus or HPV. These two activities have the potential to provide very important insight into the state of primary prevention efforts against cervical cancer among women.PICOT Question on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Cervical Cancer.
